TRiO Program

Student Support Services helps low-income students to stay in college until they earn their baccalaureate degrees. Participants who include disabled college students, receive tutoring, advisement and remedial instruction. Students are now being served at 938 colleges and universities nationwide.

As mandated by Congress, two-thirds of the students served must come from families with incomes under $24,000, where neither parent graduated from college. Over 2,600 TRIO Programs currently serve nearly 872,000 low-income Americans. Thirty-seven percent of TRIO students are Whites, 36% are African-Americans, 19% are Hispanics, 4% are Native Americans, 4% are Asian-Americans, and 2% are listed as "Other," including multiracial students. Sixteen thousand students with disabilities and more than 25,000 U.S. veterans are currently enrolled in the TRIO Programs as well.

Targeted Toward First Generation and Low-Income Students: The selection process for Student Support Service follow federal guides: two-thirds of the students in the Student Support Services Programs come from families with incomes under $24,000 (family of four), where neither parent graduated from college. In most cases, parents have no higher education experience; and do not understand the postsecondary process. We look for students that show some form of academic need, and demonstrate a commitment to completing a college education. Commitment to program participation and guidelines, plays a major factor in selection process.

Why Apply to Student Support Services?

One on One Services

As most TRIO Programs serve fewer than 250 students, (at Daley 160) TRIO staff have an opportunity to work one-on-one with each student. Unlike traditional advising programs, TRIO staff gets to know each student on a first-name basis. TRIO staffs are personally committed to the success of their students.

Built on Relationships

Over a period of several months or years, TRIO staff builds both personal and professional relationships with their students. Such positive relationships are critical to the success of every TRIO Program. The staff of each TRIO Program creates a climate of support for students as they strive to complete a college education. As a result of these strong positive relationships, many TRIO college graduates periodically return to their programs to encourage and inspire current students.

Comprehensive and Cultural

The academic and human services as administered through the TRIO Programs are comprehensive and must go far beyond the traditional services offered by college advisors. Many students in the TRIO Programs receive assistance in obtaining internships, career information, academic planning, scholarship information, and mentoring. In addition, students receive assistance in completing college admission (to 4-year institutions) and financial aid applications, tutorial services and exposure to cultural events.

If interested in applying to the program, call or visit our office to fill out the program application, bring copies of last completed tax returns, copy of SSI statements (if applicable), copy of completed FAFSA or SAR, and a statement of why you would like to be selected for participation. This program requires participation until graduation or transfer.
